If classic is your pick, Diego stylists are known to develop excellent cuts that will suit your face and style. If you want to go wild, they can make your head a theatrical work of art, as they have for the A.R.T. and the Hasty Pudding. They cater to gentlemen as well as ladies. Cuts are $40-65 ($10 cuts available Tu nights for those willing to take their chances with stylists-in-training; call ahead to reserve). Color treatments $60+, perms $100+, and foil highlighting $140+. Many quality products—Bumble & Bumble, T.I.G.I., and Biogenol—are available here. Appointments preferred, but walk-ins welcome.

Great prices and decent cuts await at this fast food drive-thru of salons, but don't be too surprised if they don't get your order exactly right. Avoid busy times (W, F nights and weekends) when you may have to wait more than an hour. Great Cuts provides a no-frills service to its mainly young clientele: expect $13 for a dry cut, and $16 for shampoo, cut, and blow-dry (they won't blow dry straight, though). Bang trims ($5) and beard trims ($4) available. A convenient source for hip Biolage and Paul Mitchell hair products.

French for “nothing special,” the 105-year-old La Flamme is often so swamped with students that you have to slog through a half-dozen back issues of Car and Driver before getting a cut. Most opinions on La Flamme are favorable, but you may want to let your roommate try it first. If nothing else, it's cheaper, safer, and generally greater than Great Cuts. Shampoo, cut, and dry for both men and women (though we've never seen a woman take this offer) $19, without shampoo $14. The staff is mostly friendly, though some only ask one question: “What number?” If you guess wrong (they want to know your preferred clipper attachment size), you'll learn, at least, for the next time. Cash/checks only. No appointments.

Sporting accolades from the likes of Elle, Cosmo, and most of the Sabliere Society, this modernist venue houses New York Chanel stylist Gino and his well-trained and fashionable underlings. If only the very best will do, drop $115 to have Gino himself trim your lovely locks. Daughter Giuliana is an excellent second choice, having picked up her dad's scissor-wielding ways. A wash, cut, and blow-dry with one of the master's trainees costs $45-75; coloring runs $65-150, perm (without a cut) $100-150, and highlighting $95-250. 10% student discount. All staff cuts are half price on M, so call for an appointment.

A maturer-than-thou grad student getting his haircut here shakes his dampened, pre-trim locks in amused chagrin; silly undergrad, trendy square salons are for kids. Those looking for subtle hairstyling will find it at Clinton's. This intimate, friendly salon winces at the thought of modern minimalism in favor of Impressionist prints, a Queen Anne chair, classical music, and a shelf holding clients' books. Wash, cut and blow-dry for women $45+, men $35+, depending on hair length. Curly hair is the owner's forte. Perms $75+, plus cut, set, and blow-dry. Highlighting $85+ (using a cap rather than foils). Clinton's also stocks Abba haircare products. By appointment only. Cash/check only.

Step right up—cheapest in the Square! André is committed to keeping salon haircare affordable for students. Haircuts $10; wash, cut, and dry $25. Free cut with full foil highlights ($75+). The green and white linoleum and peeling '80s posters may not be the most upscale, but it beats the clinical sterility of Great Cuts. André also cheerfully corrects your hair horrors. Maybe you got a lousy cut at Vidal Sassoon; maybe you had a little incident with a bottle of vodka and a Weed Wacker—either way, corrections are still only $10. Paul Mitchell and Nexxus products available.
